I extend my word of thanks to you the reader for taking your time to read my speech to the depressed. I mean those who lead a haunted life which is characterized by mistakes and some touchy blunders of the past. Those who, when they sink into regretting, they find no way out except maybe through tears and more tears. Yes I believe in God, I believe in his grace and I believe in doing well. However for now I am not playing the role of a religious preacher that I might convert people into my way of thinking. I am just an intellect sinking deeper to unveil and amend one of the key causes of unhappiness in life, which is “dwelling in the past”. It is therefore not by mistake that I am not making any reference to any quotations biblical or of any classics; my fear is that you might not be a fanatic of those writings and yet you are a potential beneficiary of my advice.
You might have been driving one day and ran over an innocent child, You might have said a simple statement maybe as a joke and thinking that you are doing good, only to discover that you did more harm than intended. You might be sited behind bars today contemplating what brought you there and end up just in tears, or you might have made a very wrong decision in choosing a marriage partner and now you realize you are in great trouble. Regret is what defines you; you can not make the next step because the previous one was not so good, you have lost confidence in being yourself and you think you are an outcast in some sense. Sometimes you think your situation is highly peculiar to yourself so much that you hate everybody who smiles or who does not understand why you are not so happy.
Now get my advice my dear and transform your life today. In order that I do not put your patience to test, I will make my speech rather short and straight forward.
You should know that people learn from mistakes, but not all history repeats itself to offer you a chance to correct it, sometimes even the most envied figures live in the shadows of their greatest errors in life, but they still move on. Somewhere grace comes their way and the large mistakes might turn into blessings in disguise. In life we are made in such a way that the past constitutes our experience, the present are our challenges but the future is never known even though we try to optimistically define it using terms like opportunities and hope. So if you continue looking back, reflecting on the past, you will always live in your history, you will never take full advantage of the present in order to shape the future. You build more and more regrets that haunt your life to an extent that you might never enjoy your chance of having ever existed under the sun.
We invented cars to speed up our movements from point A to point B, invented boats, ships and planes to cross the seas, now computers and the internet to flood our lives with the so much needed information. Inventions make life easier, but they are not as easy to make as they are easy to enjoy. The same can be said about happiness. Happiness does not come in the same way it came yesterday; every happy moment is new and unique. Sometimes we have to invent our own happy moments. We need to smile, but we have to take the courage and all that it takes to attain that condition. You might wonder why your mind cannot invent happiness everyday, yet your neighbor is cheering day in day out. Consider if you are not giving too much attention to the sad hour of your life. The best way would be to give a superficial thought to the bad past and relate it to present only to an extent enough to understand the present and open channels for advancement.
Sometimes the past make us sweat, the past make us shiver and the past make us cry yet it is only the past and it remains the past. Our delineation of the past from the present is very important. Imagine yourself driving a very small car and a great haulage truck misses you by a whisker in a potentially terrible head-on crash. Immediately after the incident you freeze and go numb, failing totally to move on, you need time to relax. Maybe you have been rushing for something very important and all those plans suffer the delay. In that event the immediate past has an effect as bad as the present but still it is the past, which will be costing the future here. For how long does the past affect you just as strongly as the present? How much time would constitute your immediate past? The shorter the time, the better for your future plans.
Past experiences make you who you are. But if the past makes you cry and regret, you do not have to be swimming in tears everyday. Let bygones be bygones. One day you missed one of you favorite dishes, but you still ate and you are living. The other day you broke your limp in an unforgettable event, as bad as it was, just pick up the crutch and move on.
